RSVP TODAY for our first Teen Educator Network Torah Learning Session!

Preparing Text Study for Teens

Thursday, October 4,  11 am – 12:30 pm

With Rabbi Joshua Fenton, Associate Director of Community Engagement, Bureau of Jewish Education

Enduring understandings or “big ideas” are found throughout the Jewish textual tradition, informing biblical narratives as well as obscure Talmudic legal discussions.  In this workshop we’ll explore the ways in which text study can be used to teach enduring understanding.  We will learn strategies for identifying and selecting Jewish texts, practice reading and unpacking texts to identify and teach enduring understandings, and create text studies of our own using the skills and strategies we gain in the time we spend together.   You will walk away with new skills, new strategies, and greater confidence in bringing text alive with your teens!

Rabbi Fenton has, since a young age, had a strong relationship to Jewish text and learning.  He was ordained at the Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies and received a Masters in Rabbinic Literature from the Zeigler School of Rabbinic Studies, and a Masters in Education from the Fingerhut School of Education, both a part of the American Jewish University. He holds a BA in Political Science from the University of California at Santa Cruz. Rabbi Fenton has held positions as Director of Teen and Leadership programs at Camp Alonim in Simi Valley, School Rabbi and Judaic instructor at Kadima Academy, and as a private Family Education Specialist.  From 2007-2011 Rabbi Fenton worked as the founding Director of the APJCC’s Center for Jewish Life and Learning. He currently serves as Associate Director for the Bureau of Jewish Education of San Francisco.  In addition, Rabbi Fenton is a Kevah instructor, a Limmud Bay Area instructor, an aging skateboarder, an over-the-hill basketball player, and an amateur horticulturalist living in Berkeley with his wife and three children.
